As we know, depression doesn’t only rear its head for one day a year so lets take a look at the link, if any (and spoiler alert, there is) between magnesium and depression.
When we purely look at the psychological functions between magnesium and depression it is clear that it has been a well debated and documented one, which makes a lot of sense given that it plays a role in many of the pathways, enzymes, hormones, and neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation.
Without getting too technical, lets break it down:
One of the most significant anti-anxiety properties of Magnesium is that it is anti-inflammatory. Chronic inflammation can take hold anywhere in the body - even in your brain - and brain inflammation is linked to anxiety, depression, and memory loss.
Magnesium has been proven to support the regulation of cortisol levels (or stress hormones). Basically when you are under stress, your body creates stress hormones which also cause a cascade of physical effects, all of which consume Magnesium. Magnesium restricts the release of stress hormones and acts as a filter to prevent them entering the brain; acting on many levels to regulate the stress response.
90% of serotonin (the feel-good hormone) is made in the gut. Since this hormone is usually known as a brain transmitter, many don't realize that its production begins in our stomachs. This means that gut health is of utmost importance when it comes to fighting anxiety, depression, and stress, however when Magnesium levels in the gut are low, it can change the habitat of the ecosystem in our stomachs and negatively affect our ability to create serotonin, keeping us feeling low or anxious.
So, not only does Magnesium regulate stress hormones, but it also helps to create the happy ones too, which would seem a critical weapon in the fight against depression and the reason why Magnesium has been called “nature’s Valium” and “the original chill pill” or as we like to call it, the ‘chill spray’
Why spray? Well magnesium can be absorbed transdermally - through the skin – bypassing the digestive system where usually the magnesium ions can be lost and less of the magnesium absorbed into the body.
Our key inclusion of cucumber promotes the penetration of the spray into the bloodstream as it acts as a powerful natural exfoliant, so the feel good factor can get to work immediately.
