I am passionate about health and wellbeing, and that includes finding ways to support our bodies during and after workouts to ensure we can continue to perform at our physical best and nurture our bodies. One of my new favourites – topical magnesium, has come to my attention in the last few years and I are really excited about it!

Applying magnesium direct to your skin (or the technical term, topically, has a long list of health benefits. Magnesium tablets tend to be the more common form of this supplement – but I have found Abundant Natural Health who have produced an amazing product that is changing the way we see magnesium.

With their Magnesium products, Abundant Natural Health have found a way for magnesium to be absorbed through the skin, stingless and fast- their cucumber infusion! This amazing ingredient does so much for your skin, it not only adds a soothing sensation, but its main point is it acts as a gentle exfoliant to open your pores and allow the magnesium to soak into your bloodstream and get working fast. By applying magnesium topically in comparison to oral it bypasses the digestive system where some of the mineral can be lost.

If you aren’t familiar with the benefits of magnesium, here are a few reasons why this is my favourite post workout supplement.

Through daily fitness activities it is natural for muscle to tear and repair itself (hence how you build new muscle), this process is important in the pursuit of increased strength, fitness and flexibility. Although you may not think your body is going through this process when you look at the calm and relaxing atmosphere of Yoga studios around even the gentlest activity still requires muscle repair. This is something that occurs naturally, but by taking(or applying direct to skin) a mineral that supports this process, such as Magnesium, you can aid your body as it repairs and regenerates muscle and connective tissue. If you have suffered a strain through more rigorous exercise, the use of Magnesium can speed up the healing process and fuel the body’s natural methods of

regeneration, to ensure you don’t lose progress due to a long and protracted recovery.

Another enticing reason to try a topical magnesium , is that it can also aid in a more restful and natural sleep. If you tend to find it hard to wind down at night time, and struggle to fall asleep, even though you feel ‘sleepy’, Magnesium may be able to help. It aids in the function of calming neurotransmitters (GABA), which are what instructs your brain that it’s time to relax and go to sleep, without this, you can remain tense and uptight, which is what delays the onset of sleep, which can in turn make you feel anxious as you start to worry about how tired you will feel the next day. I simply rub some gel into the souls of my feet or into my temples before I go to bed.
