WAKE UP! Magnesium and Sleep are a thing... and we tell you why!

August 05, 2019 2 min read

This week is Sleep Awareness Week which shines a much-needed light on how we can improve our lives through better sleep.

Tired? Don’t worry you are not alone. Poor sleep patterns can have far reaching effects mentally and physically and if you’re a sufferer, we bet that you’ve tried it all and nothing has helped. But don’t give up hope, as there’s a natural sleep remedy that can help you get those eight hours that you’re desperate for; enter Magnesium, the super mineral that plays a far more important role in restful sleep and your overall health than most people realise.

So, what is the connection between Magnesium and sleep and how can it kick insomnia to the curb?

In order to fall asleep and stay asleep, your body and brain need to relax. Easier said than done we know!

On a chemical level, Magnesium aids this process by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the system responsible for getting you calm and relaxed. It regulates neurotransmitters, which send signals throughout the nervous system and brain, quietening nerve activity, reducing anxiety, promoting relaxation and preparing our bodies for sleep; regulating the hormone melatonin, which guides sleep-wake cycles in your body.

It’s thought to help decrease cortisol, the “stress hormone” that can keep you up at night, helping your muscles to relax and you to feel calm and sleepy. Considering that two of the most common causes of insomnia are stress and anxiety, relaxation is something that will definitely help on sleepless nights!

But it doesn’t just help you get to sleep, Magnesium is also critical to many physiological and psychological processes that are essential for staying asleep, which is sometimes just as challenging isn’t it?!

So, the reality is that if you’re struggling to get to sleep, or staying there, it could be due to a Magnesium deficiency and you need to increase your intake; but don’t worry we can help with that!

The most effective way to supplement Magnesium is by applying it topically – known as transdermally - as it does not have to pass through the digestive system and kidneys and can enter the blood and tissues of the body more quickly.

We formulated our Spray and Gel with just that in mind and combined our highly concentrated, pure Magnesium, with cucumber extract, which hydrates and exfoliates the skin, enabling the Magnesium to go through the skin and straight into the bloodstream, where it gets to work more quickly.

Massage our Magnesium Spray or Gel into your skin as part of your pre-bedtime ritual and you’re on your way to a restful and restorative night’s sleep.
