We need to speak loudly and proudly, and have our voices heard. Without dialogue and awareness we can not initiate change to the way psoriasis is treated or stigmatised by society.
“Awareness is the first step to action. They have to know something is going on to know to do something about it.”
~ Derick Virgil
This isn’t easy. I have heard way too many stories about people covering up their skin, blaming dandruff, refusing to go for a swim because of the way they will be looked at in public. However, the prevalence of psoriasis is estimated to be 0.09-11.4% worldwide, and there is evidence to suggest this figure is increasing.
You’re probably thinking …. “that figure is looking very vague”, but the reason for this, is that registration of psoriasis cases is not compulsory. This leads to under reporting, not by treating clinicians but people not seeking help for psoriasis.
The World Health Organisation looked at the global burden of psoriasis. The disability adjusted life years (DALY) indicates how many years (worldwide) people have lost due to disability from psoriasis. In 2010 it was estimated that 1 050 660 years were lost due to psoriasis. This figure is high.
How is disability measured? Disability is not restricted to the physical domain, it includes the psychological and social spheres as well.
Although talking about the disease won’t directly treat psoriasis. It will improve the psychological and social impact of the psoriasis on people’s quality of life. Psoriasis does not have to be carried alone.
“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much”
~ Helen Keller
